Matthew 10

1-15 Jesus calls his disciples and gives them power over unclean spirits, to cast them out and to heal all manner of sickness and all manner of disease.

Simon - Peter                     Andrew                                      James

John                                   Philip                                           Bartholomew

Thomas.                             Matthew the publican               James - Son of Alpheus

Lebbeus - Thaddeus        Simon the Canaanite                 Judas the Iscariot

Luke 10:1                            Luke 10:19-20

Here are the twelve disciples who received power to over unclean spirits and cast them out, power to heal any sickness and any disease. Luke 9:1; Mark 3:14-15

He will teach them as they go forth to their God-appointed work, to warn the world of a soon-coming judgment. Accompanied by the power of persuasion, the power of prayer, the power of the love of God, the evangelist’s work will not, can not, be without fruit. Think of the interest that the Father and the Son have in this work. As the Father loves the Son, so the Son loves those that are his—those who work as he worked to save perishing souls. None need feel that they are powerless: for Christ declares, "All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth." He has promised that he will give this power to his workers. His power is to become their power. They are to link their souls with God. Christ desires all to enjoy the wealth of his grace, which is beyond all computation. It is limitless, exhaustless. It is ours by eternal covenant, if we will be workers together with God. It is ours if we will unite with him to bring many sons and daughters to God. { CEv 33.3 }

A unclean spirits are demons, evil angels, and devils Luke 8:27-29. In verse 27, the man had devils in him and in verse 29, Jesus commanded the unclean spirit to come out. Luke 9:42

Healing is what Jesus did more of than preaching. Whenever Jesus healed, He addressed also the spiritual and the mental. He addressed the whole person. In Luke 5:17, Jesus was teaching and as He was teaching the power to heal was present, it is only for those who see there need. So the disciples were given power to also heal. The Pharisees were there and the doctors of the law were there as well. Here we see Jesus presenting at a religious meeting. But they came to spy and find an accusation against him MH 74.2. He tells them not to go to the Gentiles, but to the lost sheep of the house of Israel. So Jesus tells them as they go preaching, saying the kingdom of heaven is at hand they are to heal and cast out devils. The kingdom of heaven does not have unclean spirits, sickness, or disease. In Luke 17:20-21 Jesus said the kingdom of God is within you. It doesn’t come by outward show or observation. The kingdom of heaven has power to heal the sick, cleanse the lepers, raise the dead, and cast out devils. Later on, Jesus shares what the kingdom of heaven is like. Jesus consider those worthy who will receive his disciples and hear their words, so that they may have peace. If they don’t receive their words Jesus told them to dust off their feet and leave Acts 13:50-52. They end up judging themselves. It will be more tolerable for Sodom and Gomorrah than for them. Sodom and Gomorrah was destroyed by fire Genesis 19:24-25, 28, the only way I can think of Sodom and Gomorrah to be more tolerable is that it was destroyed quickly. The Bible says that Abraham woke up early in the morning and saw smoke going up as a furnace. As for those who heard the truth and rejected it will be judged by what they know or should have knew.

16- 33 Jesus warns his disciples of certain things that will occur because they are his followers. They will be as sheep in the midst of wolves. We must also be wise as serpents and harmless as doves. Which means wise in doing good and harmless in doing evil Romans 16:19; Philippians 2:15; Hebrews 7:26 the serpent was wise in deceiving Eve, he was careful with his words. We are to be wise in our words and actions Proverbs 13:16. Christ said because of him, they will be brought before governors and kings to be a testimony not only to them, but also to the Gentiles. We don’t need to worry about what to say because the words will come at that same hour by the Holy Spirit. This will cause a shaking, even within family. If they endure to the end, they shall be saved. When you stand with Jesus you will cause division and it will even break up families. Brother shall deliver brother, father against child, and children against parents and deliver them to death. Not only family will hate you, but the world because of Christ. The glory of the Lord will illuminate the whole earth and those who don’t know Christ will reject it and this will be a test for God’s people to endure and trust Him at all cost. When persecution comes flee to another city Jesus told them. The disciples will not finish going through the cities of Israel until Jesus comes. So they started with Jesus and they will finish with His Spirit. Because Jesus said wait for the promise of the Father in Acts 1:4-5 and they will take the gospel to all of Jerusalem and to the ends of the 🌍.

Jesus said the disciple is not above his master. Jesus showing the humanity in Him. Because if they called Jesus beelzebub, they will also call them the same thing. Jesus says, fear them not, but fear Him who I see able to destroy both soul and body in hell.

Jesus was also persecuted and left when persecuted and moved on. Matthew 12:14-14; Luke 4:29-31; John 10:39-42; 11:53-54.

As human beings, one of the biggest things we deal with is fear. Fear is often something that comes up in our day to day lives. Jesus says, "fear them not" in verse 26 and says it again in verse 28 and 31. We should fear God and not men. Jesus said fear not them which kill the body, but rather fear him which is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. God knows everything about us, even the number of hairs we have on our head. He knows when a sparrow fall to the ground. We are of more value than they. Whatever is covered and done in secret will be revealed. We need not be afraid and confess Jesus before men and Jesus will confess us before his Father, but if we deny Jesus before men then He will deny is before His Father.

34-42 The Lord is a Savior and wants everyone saved into his kingdom, but Christ said in verse 14 that there will be people who will not receive the word of God. The word of God is peace but those who don’t receive it will accept it as a sword and causes division Luke 12:49-53 and those that do accept it, this is the cross we must bear. We must stay true to God, this is our place in the furnace of affliction, that we will be purified and to convince others of the reality of faith and godliness GC 48.1-3
