Matthew 1

  • Abraham who begat Isaac has Ishmael first but he was not from his own bowels or by promise Galatians 4:23. Jacob begat Judah the fourth son of Leah. Laban has cheated Jacob Genesis 29:21-26 the promise was given in Genesis 49:8-10 The scepter shall not depart from Judah.. it was to Judah because Reuben lay with Bilhah who was Jacob’s concubine Gen 35:22; Simeon and Levi slew all the males of a city after being circumcised because of what they did to their sister Dinah Gen 34:24-26 so Judah, which is where Jesus came from this line. Judah who was deceived by his daughter in law had twins Gen 38:29 and a lineage in Ruth 4:18, 12 Pharez which came out first means "breach" Genesis 38:29 and in Ruth 4:12 it says "let thy house be like the house of Pharez..." 1 Chronicles 5:2; Numbers 26:21, 22; unto Judah shall the people be Genesis 49:10. Esrom and Aram not much in the bible regarding them besides who there children were. Aminadab has Aaron as a son-in-law Exodus 6:23 so right here is the time of the Exodus. Naasson was the prince of Judah 1 Chronicles 2:10; Numbers 2:3. Not much in the Bible regarding Salmon. Boaz which we find in the book of Ruth shares the story with Ruth. Boaz also is of Rahab the harlot that received the Israelite spies. This is the same as Rachab. Salmon married Rahab and they had Boaz. The Bible says Booz begat Obed of Ruth and not just Booz begat Obed, it specifically mentions her. In 1 Chronicles 2:11-12 it says Boaz begat Obed. Ruth is probably mentioned because she had compassion on Naomi and clave to her. The Lord was already working in heart and it’s led her to say the words in Ruth 1:16-17. Boaz shared an encouragement to her in 2:11-12; 3:11. God is no respecter of person. He looks at the heart and not the outer appearance. We know from here that David came from this family. Then mentions Solomon who David begat, but it was the wife of Urias. This clearly shows that God can turn a horrible situation into a blessing or a testimony. David did truly repent and we read it in Psalm 51. God is also showing He will be reaching those who are not Israelites. He wants to redeem everyone. David begat Solomon which we know through Bethsheba who was the wife of Uriah. Solomon became one of the wisest men on earth during his time.

  • Rehoboam the son of Solomon has caused a separation in Israel and also did evil in the sight of the Lord 1 Kings 12:15, 16; 14:21-24. He also humbled himself 2 Chronicles 12:5-8 but in verse 14 it says he did evil because he did not prepared his heart to seek the Lord.

  • Abijah or Abijam (Abia) 1 Kings 15:1-8; 2 Chronicles 13:1-5, 13-22; 14:1 Abijam walked in all the sins of his father and his heart was not perfect with the Lord his God. In Chronicles it says Abijah made the Lord his God and burn unto the Lord in the sanctuary and kept the charge of the Lord. In battle against Jeroboam they cried unto the Lord and the Lord smote Jeroboam. His son Asa reign in his stead.

  • Asa did which was good and right in the eyes of the Lord 2 Chronicles 14:2 and Asa listened to the Lord and followed His law and commandments 2 Chronicles 14:4 but Asa started to rely on flesh 2 Chronicles 16:7 and Asa got sick in the foot and still did not seek the Lord and died. 2 Chronicles 16:12. Jehoshaphat reigned in his stead.

  • Jehoshaphat always look to the spirit of prophecy. 2 Chronicles 18:6; 2 Chronicles 20:20; 1 Kings 22:7; 2 Kings 3:11-12. This story encourages me as I deal with a situation with my family. Jehoshaphat had went to battle with Ahab against the Syrians and Ahab dies and Jehoshaphat goes back home. And the prophet rebukes him but also mentions that he has prepared his heart to seek God. So he also makes some changes and to bring back Israel to God. He sets up judges in the land and I like what he said in 2 Chronicles 19:6-7 that the Lord is with you in the judgment. Then he says in verse 11 deal courageously and the Lord shall be with the good. After Jehoshaphat, Jehoram (Joram) his son reigned in his stead.

  • Jehoram, He did that which was evil and married Ahab’s daughter, in 2 Chronicles 21:7; 2 Kings 8:19 it says the Lord would not destroy the house of David because of the covenant he made with David, a strong He promised to give a light to him and to his sons forever. Jehoram killed his brothers and did the same thing as Ahab. A message from Elijah came to him by writing saying a great plague will smite the people and there will be other nations coming against you and the Lord smote him in the bowels with an incurable disease and he died after two years 2 Chronicles 21:12-20. It is interesting that the people was affected with sickness because of what’s the King did, but the Lord was specific. It says thy people, and thy children, and thy wives and all his goods verse 14. So he died from the disease and was not buried with the Kings and his youngest son Ahaziah reigned in his stead.

  • Ahaziah had his mother as a counseller to do wickedly. 2 Chronicles 22:3-4 and the house of Ahab we’re his counseller to his destruction. Ahaziah went to fight against Jehu with Jehoram the son of Ahab. Jehu was anointed to destroy the house of Ahab. While fighting against the house of Ahab Jehu saw the princes of Judah and also slew them and Ahaziah. In 2 Chronicles 22:9 it says the house of Ahaziah had no power to keep still the kingdom. It looks like in Matthew 1:9 it skips some of the Kings. After Ahaziah, Athaliah was trying to rule and to destroy all the seed royal of the house of Judah 2 Chronicles 22:10. Joash started out doing right because of Jehoiada and after his death he turned from the Lord 2 Chronicles 24:17, 22. Amaziah his reigned in his stead 2 Kings 12:21 and then Azariah (Uzziah) reigned in his stead 2 Kings 14:21 and then Jotham which continues in Matthew 1:9

  • Joatham - 2 Chronicles 27:2 the Bible says he did that which is right in the sight of the Lord. He also prepared his ways before the Lord verse 6. After him Ahaz his son reigned in his stead.

  • Ahaz - did that which was wicked in the sight of the Lord. He made is children to pass through the fire. He relied upon the king of Assyria for help when the king of Israel came against him. He pattern an altar he saw in Damascus as he was going to meet Tiglath-pileser 2 Kings 16:3, 7, 10. In the time of his distress he trespass yet the more against God 2 Chronicles 28:22-23 and Hezekiah his son reigned in his stead.

  • Hezekiah - He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. In the first month of his reign he open the doors of the Lord’s house and repaired it. He also had a Passover and the Lord bless and cleansed the people. The Lord has also extended his life when he was ill unto death. Also king of Babylon sent presents to Hezekiah and Hezekiah showed them all the house of his precious things and treasures. Isaiah said all that is in thy house shall be carried to Babylon. The Lord try him that he might know all that was in his heart 2 Chronicles 32:31 and Manasseh reigned in Himself stead.

  • Manaseeh - He didn’t that which is evil in the sight of the Lord. He also seduced more evil than the nations 2 Kings 21:9. He also shed innocent blood very much. The Lord brought the Assyrian which took Manasseh captive and he humbled himself greatly before God and brought him again to Jerusalem. Manasseh knew that the Lord He was God. 2 Chronicles 33:11-13. Amon his son reigned in his stead.

  • Amon - He did that which was evil and the servants conspired against him and slew him. Amon trespass more and more and did not humble himself 2 Chronicles 33:23. Josiah his son reigned in his stead.

  • Josiah - He did that which was right in the sight of the Lord. He repaired the house of the Lord and found the book of the law. After the king heard the words of the book and rent his clothes and humbled himself. The Lord accepted it and will not bring the evil while he is alive. 2 Kings 22:19-20. Josiah made some major reforms and destroyed the houses of the sodomites, made sure no more children will pass through the fire to molech. He break in pieces the images and cut down the groves, and slew the priests of the high places. Josiah turned to the Lord with all his heart and with all his soul and might. No king before him and after him arose like unto him. 2 Kings 23:25. But the king of Egypt went to fight against the king of Assyria and Josiah went to fight against him. The king of Egypt said he did not come to fight with him and this was from the mouth of God 2 Chronicles 35:21 but Josiah still went and got wounded and died in Jerusalem. Josiah had four sons: Johanan, Jehoiakim, Zedekiah, and Shallum which is probably Jehoahaz who reigned in his stead. He is not mentioned in the lineage in Matthew.

  • Jehoahaz -is also Shallum but he is the fourth son of Josiah 1 Chronicles 3:15 and he reigned for only three months. He did that which is evil in the sight of the Lord. The king of Egypt put him down and made Eliakim (Jehoiakim) king which is the second son of Josiah. He is not mentioned also in Matthew.

  • Jehoiakim reigned eleven years and also did which is evil. He rebelled against Nebuchadnezzar. Jehoiachin his son reigned in his stead. In Matthew the name Jechonias is mentioned after Josiah which is also Jehoiachin and he begat Salathiel who also begat Zorobabel who is the same as Zerubbabel in Ezra 2:2, 3:2

  • Jehoiachin (Jechonias, Jeconiah) PK 438.2 reigned three months and did that which is evil and Nebuchadnezzar carried away all Jerusalem to Babylon 2 Kings 24:14-16 including Jehoiachin and made his brother Mattaniah (Zedekiah) king in his stead. In Babylon Jechonias (Jehoiachin) begat Salathiel (Shealtiel) who begat Zerubbabel. His story is in Zechariah, Ezra, and Haggai. During Zerubbabel lifetime the Israelites were allowed by God to return to Jerusalem. Zerubbabel begat Abiud and nothing is mentioned in the scripture about him. His name means "my father is majesty" and he begat Eliakim.

  • Eliakim doesn’t have much in the Bible as well, as far as being the son Abiud. His name mean "raised up by God" Eliakim begat Azor

  • Azor name means "a helper " and begat Sadoc or Zadok.

  • Sadoc doesn’t have much in scripture as the son of Azor. His name means "just" Sadoc begat Achim.

  • Achim name means "the Lord will establish" and there’s is not much in scripture regarding him. After the captivity, the names mentioned are only here in Matthew and not much anywhere else in scripture. Achim begat Eliud.

  • Eliud name means "God’s my praise"and he begat Eleazer.

  • Eleazer name means "Help of God" and he begat Matthan

  • Matthan name means "gift" and he begat Jacob, grandfather of Joseph

  • Jacob name means "supplanter" and he begat Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus Christ.

Jehoiachin, also Jeconiah and Coniah rebelled against the Lord and did not surrendered to Nebuchadnezzar and the Lord said in Jeremiah 22:24-30 that He will cast him out out the country and die in Babylon and that is seed shall not occupy the throne of David. Which did happen because Nebuchadnezzar placed Mattaniah who is a son of Josiah to rule the throne and changed his name to Zedekiah. Zedekiah is the last king of Judah. Although Joseph is the legal earthly father of Jesus and a descendant of David but not the physical father of Joseph. To avoid the curse on Jechonias.

The birth of Jesus has a deep significant. He says that Mary was found with child of the Holy Ghost. In John 3: Jesus said except a man be born of water and the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God. So right here in Matthew 1:18, 20 Mary was with child who is Jesus by the Holy Spirit just like we need to be born with the Holy Spirit. Joseph had to believe what the angel said about Mary am day he did believe. Jesus was to save people from sin and not in sin. The incarnate Christ who came into our world to be "God with us"

"By His life and His death, Christ has achieved even more than recovery from the ruin wrought through sin. It was Satan's purpose to bring about an eternal separation between God and man; but in Christ we become more closely united to God than if we had never fallen. In taking our nature, the Saviour has bound Himself to humanity by a tie that is never to be broken. Through the eternal ages He is linked with us. "God so loved the world, that He gave His only-begotten Son." John 3:16. He gave Him not only to bear our sins, and to die as our sacrifice; He gave Him to the fallen race. To assure us of His immutable counsel of peace, God gave His only-begotten Son to become one of the human family, forever to retain His human nature. DA 25.3"

"Through Christ's redeeming work the government of God stands justified. The Omnipotent One is made known as the God of love. Satan's charges are refuted, and his character unveiled. Rebellion can never again arise. Sin can never again enter the universe. Through eternal ages all are secure from apostasy. By love's self-sacrifice, the inhabitants of earth and heaven are bound to their Creator in bonds of indissoluble union.
The work of redemption will be complete. In the place where sin abounded, God's grace much more abounds. The earth itself, the very field that Satan claims as his, is to be not only ransomed but exalted. Our little world, under the curse of sin the one dark blot in His glorious creation, will be honored above all other worlds in the universe of God. Here, where the Son of God tabernacled in humanity; where the King of glory lived and suffered and died,—here, when He shall make all things new, the tabernacle of God shall be with men, "and He will dwell with them, and they shall be His people, and God Himself shall be with them, and be their God." And through endless ages as the redeemed walk in the light of the Lord, they will praise Him for His unspeakable Gift,— Immanuel, "God with us." . DA 26.2-DA 26.3"
